Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mom. But her parents would not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry claimed that she was too nervous to be an actor during high school, but started performing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then caused Perry home to California and theater roles were available. She and her mother starred on Broadway together as part of The Other Place, in 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie with her in the year 2015. Perry played a lead role in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in ABC's political thriller Scandal that starred her father. In the same year, she portrayed a child character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. The character was picked via auditions having a strong association with it.
